I adore weddings, I literally live and breathe them. But sometimes the inspiration can be a bit blonde, a bit skin tight and back bearing and a bit airbrushed. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with that, but sometimes you need inspiration that’s just a bit different.
A bride I had a trial with recently reminded me of my 19/20 year old self. A bit Emo, a bit Rocker, piercings with a thick quiff undercut. She’s basically me, but gay. She plans on wearing a tailored, bespoke green and black suit to her wedding. She therefore needed a look to compliment her EPIC style as well as skin and makeup preferences.
We talked through the kind of makeup she usually wears. Eyeliner. That’s literally it. This got me to thinking about the types of inspiration that are out there for ladies that AREN’T a massive fan of foundation, that don’t even know what a highlighter is and don’t want a boho up do or glamorous waves. That brought me to these epic looking ladies, that don’t scream immediate femininity, but are cool, unusual, elegant and do their own thing just perfectly.
Ellen de Generes
I’m sorry if Ellen is a typical gay cliche for many of you out there, but I’ve absolutely adored this woman- as has my heterosexual Mother, for over 2 decades. She’s the first woman I ever saw wear a modern, cool, beautifully tailored suit, on TV and red carpet and her hair and makeup choices are something I influenced my own Mum’s hair and makeup on for my own wedding. You can always see her best features- her eyes and wonderful textured crop. And her skin is always radiant and clear.
I absolutely adore Vicky’s McClure’s style. She’s graceful, cool, effortless and very sophisticated. I loved her in all the This is England instalments and I love her personal red carpet style. Her make up artist Justine Jenkins nails her looks every single time. She plays up those incredible eyes mostly, but also does a red lip with vigour. Her hair stylist Louis Byrne, who is also Emma Willis’ hair stylist has the most epic skills; it’s edgy, textured cool and gorgeous every single time.
Okay, so I beyond love Pink, aka Alicia Moore. I adore her. I have done since I was 14 and used to dance to her first album in Stage School. My love for her continued way into adulthood ( I dyed my hair the above colour when I was 16 and it stayed that way until I was 19)- I left the mad dance skills behind… 😐 I love Pink’s ability to give Zero F*cks about what anyone thinks of her, her body, her style. She’s a magnificently talented artist with an insane sense of style. She inspired me to shave the sides of my hair off and it stuck. If mine was half as thick as hers I’d basically copy the above style. To me she’s the perfect androgynous icon.
Yes! Miranda from Sex and The City! Admittedly these are her more glamorous red carpet looks, my faves are actually her in Sex and The City, playing Miranda in the early seasons, but the screenshots and photos from that were terrible. Beyond pale to the point of pink and freckly and not a hint of false tan in sight. Amazing strawberry blonde hair verging on the colour of fire, and a slightly androgynous, awkward, feminine style. Love.
Aww I LOVE Emma Willis! She has been married to a teen hood crush of mine for the last 10 or so years ( Matt from Busted, remember him?! ) and she’s epically gorgeous. Her skin is crazy beautiful and a few years ago she had all her chopped off into this magnificent thick ‘ here there and everywhere- life of it’s own’ quiff. She has the same hair stylist as Vicky McClure ( above ) and is usually rocking a badass smokey eye to enhance those gorgeous icy blues, or a banging red lip. She’s also damn fine in a suit.
Tessa Thompson has been a visual hero of mine for a few years, back when she starred in Creed. You may also know her from Thor: Ragnarok. She always has super clear, natural skin and an epic looking do. She has toyed with braids ( mostly braids ), her natural waves in up dos- see below, and braids in braids ♡ ! Always in a simple cut outfit that has a twist and something funky such as a strike of red under the eyes. Abstract, almost. I love it.
Kristen Stewart’s looks are so versatile and her androgyny was actually way ahead of it’s time. I love that she’s known for doing her own thing. Her hair stylists and makeup artists are never afraid to give her something different.
I’ve included a lot of Alia as I simply adore her style and portraits here. You may recognise her from Arrested Development, Transparent and more recently, Search Party. Beautiful natural skin bursting with freckles. Perfectly imperfect natural curly hair. Gorgeous. I love the way she kills wearing a shirt completely buttoned up with or without tie.
Lena Waithe is someone I’ve only just come to know of. If you’ve seen Ready Player One you’ll know she plays Helen. I absolutely love just how pared back her style is. Her skin is minimal, it breaths. Her hair is amazing. She’s shaved it off recently which I adore. I love the skin- head look on both men and women, I’m waiting for a Bride to rock it on her wedding day!
