My current skincare faves and what I was using before.

You may have read my previous skincare post about my facial with Pamela at Mortar and Milk. This post will explore how my Winter/ Spring skin care regime has changed for the better, what products I’m using, why and how. These will be referred to as Before Facial and After Facial.

Before Facial

Cleansing and Exfoliating AM:

I would start most mornings with an Elemis Collagen Cleansing Balm cleanse. Gently buffing with a flannel. If I needed to exfoliate it would either be with Aesop’s Exfoliating Paste or Bioderma’s Hydrabio Exfoliating Cream. In the summer/ heat ( haha, I know!) I’ve massage Avene’s Clearance Gel over my forehead to feel squeaky clean.

Spritz and Moisturise:

My mornings and evenings for 5 or so years have involved a Rose Water Spritz. It’s calming, hydrating, wakes you up and smells lovely. It’s also super cheap. I got mine from Mona- Rimzi Cosmetics in Shepherds Bush, you can get it from Sainsbury’s/ Asda, Amazon, or Mona/ Rimzi Cosmetics in Shepherds Bush. I’d use Lush’s Tea Tree Toner for my oilier forehead and problematic chin/ jaw area.

I would moisturise generally with Lush’s Dream Cream. I did have Kiehls’ Rosa Arctica but got such a horrendous rash from it just after Christmas I threw it away. It DID have copious amounts of Shea Butter in which my skin doesn’t like so that may have kicked my face off. Again, for a more matte appearance I’d use Avene’s Mattifying Emulsion.

Cleansing and Exfoliating PM:

Taking my make up off I’d use Avene’s milk cleanser for my cheeks and the cleanance gel for my forehead. If I felt I needed a more polished look, I would either go for Aesop’s Exfoliant Paste or Bioderma’s Exfoliating Cream once again. For taking off my eye make up I have ALWAYS used my faithful Simple Kind to Eyes Make Up Remover Cream. Never fails. It does waterproof, lashes, conditions, you name it.

If I felt I needed an in depth soothing cleanse I’d reach for the Elemis again. If I wanted something to get rid of the congestion and rubbish to then extract, I’d use Sukin Natural Charcoal Face Mask on my forehead, chin and jaw and for my cheeks I’d use Sukin’s Detox Face Mask.

None of these, I might add really felt like they were actually doing anything. I’d still get breakouts, my face would still be dry. My skin is really temperamental and as I’m getting older I need very specific treatments to do very specific things and ape with my face’s mood swings. Something would work for a week, and then not work.

You’ll notice, I have favourites. I can’t over complicate my skin with two much, as with two little, it gets confused/ bored and dislikes. Such effort!

After Facial

Since taking Pamela’s advice, I’ve simplified, and am more efficient with what I use.

Cleansing and Exfoliating AM + PM:

My eye make up still comes off with Simple Kind to Eyes Make Up Remover Cream. If it ain’t broke, don’t mess with it 🙂 I also have Oskia’s Illuminating Vitamin Cleanser, it gives my face a lovely subtle dose of Vitamin C, feels balmy rather than gel-ey and leaves my face feeling soft. I only lightly buff if I feel the need rather than every time. I use this if I want it feel soothed and want a gentle cleanse.

If I want to feel tingly, refreshed and mildly re booted I’ll use Exuviance’s Gentle Cleansing Cream with PHA’s and botanicals. It smells like sun cream and the PHA’s are PERFECT for exfoliating sensitive, dry, dehydrated skin types gently and efficiently. For days I want a full on exfoliate, clear out my pores, get rid of debris and dead skin I now use Exuviance’s Bionic Tonic Pads. They’re specificially formulated for dry, sensitive and dehydrated skin, feel so lovely and tingly and leave my skin feeling clear, calmed, clean and exfoliated. Not a scrub in sight.

Spritz and Moisturise AM + PM:

I still experiment with the odd spritz as in Winter and Spring it makes me feel better 🙂 . I invested in Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir. It’s lovely don’t get me wrong but I shall be going back to my good old rose water when it runs out as I don’t need a second mortgage to pay for it the rate I go through it… I have also introduced Clinisept into my routine. It’s an antimicrobial spray and is used in hospitals for this- the prevention of infection ( it’s also got anti viral herpes properties). I pop this on cotton wool and wipe all over my face avoiding the eye area, paying particular attention to where I get congested and where I suffer coldsores- lips, cheeks and nose. It smells like bleach, but don’t let that freak you out, it’s totally safe for the skin.

I’ve introduced a serum into my routine too. I talked to a very nice lady at Bare Minerals and she introduced me to their Skin Longevity Vital Power Serum. And I absolutely love it. I use it twice a day and it literally draws moisture and health into my face. My skin drinks it up. It contains various humectants, Vitamin C ( Yep, I’m listening to Pamela’s ‘ a little goes a long way’ regarding VitC), it’s also  contains anti oxidants, and Peucedanum Japonicum Leaf ( a regenerative Japanese plant- that can ALSO be ingested ( apparently, according to Biochemist’s notes, please don’t track it down and eat it on my account)).

I’m still moisturising with Lush’s Dream Cream, I’ll probably re invest in it as again, if it ain’t broke… SPF is varied. I use either Simple Regeneration Age Resisting Day Cream SPF15, OR if it’s particularly sunny I’ll use Eucerin’s Sun Face Cream Sensitive Protect SPF30 / 50.

A few evenings a week; post excessive alcohol or if I’ve been at my parent’s who are smokers, I’ll use Caudalie’s VineActiv Overnight Detox Oil . This decision had nothing to do with Pamela ( shock shock ! ) but a lovely lady named Lucy at SpaceNK Regent Street gave me a sample. It didn’t make my face itch, my skin looked clearer the morning after and felt very soft.

Of a fortnight I also am a MASSIVE fan of Simple’s Water Boost Hydrating Sheet Masks. Simple can do no wrong in my eyes. Their skincare is so beyond basic but I love it for that. The sheets are riddled with hydration.
